So I finally got myself a timepiece after 6 months of agonizing. I like the look, and it’s a good weight and thickness. I don’t mind that it isn’t a brand with a huge amount of horological significance. It’s the one I like, and an automatic watch for under $100 is fine with me.

Congrats! It looks really nice.
It’s a Shinola at a 10th the price.

I know some watch snobs like to shit on Fossil but of the two I have they’ve held up great, look good and don’t break the bank. Nice find.

Shinolas use $35 Ronda movements. The Fossil probably has a $35 Seagull movement. I hope Shinolas look really good, because $800 is a lot to pay for a quartz movement and a stainless case.

I have a similar one

That’s nice! I like the style and exposed mechanism.
I just did the same. After not wearing a watch for about 20 years, and looking (and reading) for months, I started small and ordered a Seiko 5 earlier today. $58 plus a leather strap. I figure I can’t go terribly wrong at that price point. The alternative was a quartz Stürhling.

Thank you. Shinola’s are expensive because they are saying “hey look we’re a US watch company that makes fancy watches” and that’s about it. If I am spending that on a watch, I better have a damn good reason.

Very nice look. Nothing wrong with a Fossil for a cheaper classy watch. I have a few in my collection. Here’s one that I am currently wearing.

I looked at the Seiko 5 but none of them really appealed that much to me - at least not at the price point I wanted to spend. This is honestly the first time I’ve ever spent more than $35 on a watch. All I had before were cheap Timex pieces with IndiGlo that stopped working after a few months.

My fiance wanted one, so I got him one. Good enough reason for me.

Nice! I have a Fossil Grant exposed automatic and love it. They make some good watches.

Yep, last watch I bought was $40, from Eddie Bauer when I was a teenage stockroom flunky.
Watches are 100% about personal tastes, no? Even if the Seiko turns out to be a flop with me, I’ll always be fascinated with the business and scale (and prices!!) of the watch industry.

Nothing wrong with that.

They are very pretty and have good workmanship, but good lord are they expensive!

Meh, it was my engagement present to him and I was ready to spend as much if not more than what he did on the ring, so I’m just glad it was under four figures

If you shop for another take a look at Nixon, I’m hooked on Nixon watches. Fossil was my go to before I found Nixon. Fossil also makes watches for other brands...good stuff.
